Year 2000 saw the introduction of the ACT 1000yards BR Shooter Of The Year for both "Light Gun" and "Heavy Gun".  Organisers and administrators hope this will give foundations for a credible event plus ensure the spirit of the events beginnings will be remembered.  Winners of this championship have their names inscribed onto the perpetual shield (one for each class of light and heavy) which are kept on display in the ACT Rifle Club club house.

Canberra only shoots 5 times per year giving a total of 10 matches.  Unlike the typical IBS 6 match agg or 10 match agg championships, SOTY started with a different structure to give a fair go to all shooters who may only have the ability to compete 3 or more times.  With this in mind, SOTY was originally based on the final results of each competitors best 3 day aggregate scores (2 consecutive targets per day) out of the 5 matches shot at Canberra Rifle Club in the ACT throughout each year.

Come 2002 and after a look back at the previous 2 years data, it was notice the level of qualified shooters for the SOTY shields were small.  This was due to the tricky conditions that Canberra offers and that most shooters only appeared 3 times through the year.  This meant a new formula had to be derrived, and it was.

From 2002 onwards, SOTY will now be based on the highest score total of each competitors best 6 individual targets shot at any time during the year irrespective of the order or sequence of which they were shot.

Special mention goes to those who contributed their own funds for the SOTY perpetual shields etc.  Without the support of these donations, things such as this are not possible.  Canberra Rifle Club would like to thank;

JOHN WATERS for producing the shields and all the moulding/forming work,

JOHN SKINNER of Adhesive Engineering for supplying the epoxy resin to produce the IBS logo figurine.  They can be contacted in Sydney on 9477-7877,

STUART ELLIOTT for supplying a mould to produce the figurine.

DAVID WATERS for the small funds donated for materials and finishing etc.
